Paying It Forward

As Fall comes to a fast halt and old man winter rears it's head, we all seem slightly depressed.  We put away our yard decorations and put up snow fences and Christmas lights.  The holidays are coming, every store stocked full of everything needed for the holidays.  As we approach Thanksgiving, most people start to be more generous.  This happens at this time every year, I still can't pinpoint exactly why this is.
After marrying my husband last September, we were out to dinner on our honeymoon.  It was a small town local buffet with a gift shop,  As we waited to be seated, they announced that we were newlyweds.  We browsed the gift shop for a keepsake and started getting congratulations and wise words by a few older couples.  Our name was called and we ordered our meals, which were delicious!  We talked for a bit after eating, waiting for our bill.  We kept talking, enjoying every minute as we waited on our bill but it never came.  My husband waved down our waiter and he said "your bill was picked up by somebody."  We were shocked as we left a tip on the table.  We walked through the gift shop to exit and an older couple in the corner said "congrats again, marriage is the best journey you'll ever have."  We immediately knew they picked up our tab and they admitted they couldn't resist.
We both felt so loved from that, we knew we had to pay it forward ourselves.  So, around Veteran's Day we were out to eat and saw a veteran with his wife sitting two tables away.  We connected with them right away, as we watched him assist his wife by taking off her coat, hat, and placed her walker in the corner.  The couple had to be in their upper 80's.  My husband told our waitress that we would get their bill.  We ate and the waitress brought us the two bills.  The couple got the same meal and shared a dessert.  We paid and talked a bit.  The veteran asked for the bill but was told it had been picked up.  His expression was priceless as he sat back in his chair stunned.  He then got up to get his wife's walker, helped her put on her coat and hat.  He thanked everyone around him. "Well deserved sir" said my husband as he shook his hand.  We shortly followed them out of the restaurant.  Man, did that feel good!

So as the holidays come closer, pay it forward.  Buy someone's meal, grocery bill or bus pass.  You don't know what they're going through.  It makes your heart full and you soul sing.

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." -Luke 6:38
